My EDM Top Ten - Part 5

It's finally New Year's Eve and I wish you all the best entry into the new year, but before we get there I want to share what I think has been the greatest elements of the electronic world this year.

2. Arkasia.
Okay, I simply cannot express how talented this man is. He changes the game with EVERY release. January saw the release of the Impact EP, which featured Orbit - the mammoth second single which I can promise, will still drive as much emotion in ten years as it does now. His Electronic Symphony album released in May, continued to perpetuate his mastery of the genre. Listening to it in succession will always give me the greatest buzz, even with four albums with Heavy Artillery Records he still finds a way to bring something original to the floor. In my eyes he really is the best, and 2015 promises to be another big year for him. The preview of the title track from his next album, Ethereality, is now out on his soundcloud. Watch this space.

1. Kannibalen Records
This position really must go without saying, if you've been aware of Kannibalen over the last twelve months then you have undoubtedly been supplied with the most diverse, most daring and sometimes the most downright terrifying songs to have been produced. ever. They have all been at it and they as a team have all been reaching heights that I don't believe have ever been seen before in this corner of the electronic world. They are quickly becoming an international name with international artists, and genre encompassing releases. I can't fault them; Black Tiger Sex Machine, Apashe, Dabin, Dead Battery, Karluv Klub, ALL OF THEM have raised the bar for themselves this year and have done so time after time, a round of applause is long overdue for these guys, but they appear to love what they do so much that the fame slips into less important matters.
It is Kai Wachi however who tops them all in my opinion, no single producer has made me fear for my sanity as much as he. Really, I don't know what fuels his menace, I think that'll be a secret left secret. However, for this year at least he really is number ONE.

Happy new year everyone, all the best for 2015!

My EDM Top Ten - Part 4

4. Crywolf.
When it comes to my favourite new artist discovery of the year, Crywolf is absolutely, absolutely no. 1. I don't think any of his work this year can be discredited on any level, his work this year on the Angels EP and his collaborative works with Ianborg on the Runaway EP set new standards in their field. It's an incredible feat for an artist (or artists) to be so exposed through their work - I feel as though I can listen to Ribcage and see every intimate moment that led to it's creation, but I don't think anyone else does this nearly the same way he does, I feel it's made for me and for me alone, it's that closeness that wins him a spot on my list.
https://soundcloud.com/crywolf/sets/crywolf-ianborg-runaway-ep-1

3. Inspected Launch Event
On a completely different end of the spectrum, The Inspected Launch was such an eruptive, exhilarating experience. It was literally a completely free gig organised by the good people over at the Inspected label in honour of their pop-up store in Shoreditch, London. I traveled there with a good friend of mine, I met some of the producers I've longed to see live for years and then got to hear them play. Incredible.
I have so much respect for all of those who played that day, including XKore, Gemini, Asa & Sorrow, but it was Culprate's set that stole the show. It's still the single best live set I've ever heard.
Here's some footage from the event, it's not the best quality, but then live shows really can't be relived through video footage. But do enjoy!

My EDM Top Ten - Part 3

6. Seven Lions - Worlds Apart EP
I think I can say honestly say that this EP was up there with this year's best. It really is beautiful, otherworldly listening. Listening to the EP in order you begin somewhere on terrestrial ground with 'Don't Leave' but over the next three songs especially, you are emotionally catapulted into the sheer joy of the stars. No single track was given anything but total attention during production and you can feel how he [Seven Lions] really has given his all to each song: I must also applaud Kerli's efforts on 'World's Apart' and 'Keep It Close' her vocals are so haunting, so unadulterated. The two artists are so celestial in their work here that I really do feel humbled each time I see the titles. It will be a very long time before this EP will be matched, but it has already earned an eternal place in my mind at least.

5. The Glitch Mob - Love Death Immortality
If you've just read my post for Seven Lions at no.6, you must be wondering why he's so far away from the number One spot on my list, but then again, I cannot tell you how much The Mob have rocked my world over the past year. The LA-based trio announced their second album maybe this time last year with a February release. I could not contain my excitement. Days on end I could listen to nothing but 'Drink The Sea' (Their debut (outstanding) album) and their second album demolished every expectation I could have had. They used this album as a space to court with their darkness, dance with their wild natures and to really explore the depth and breadth of the sound they are still so greatly unchallenged in.
And this is how I felt BEFORE I went to see them in concert. They blew my mind. I stood with hundreds of other fans, reveling in raw emotion. It was the first time I had ever felt so much with so few words involved. It really was the best night of my life.

I even did a backflip in the final drop of the last song of the night. If something like that doesn't make you feel as if you've taken on a starship with your bare hands and won, I really don't think that anything will.

This video was taken from that show in London, which at the time was the greatest event I had ever been to live! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7SoQWTFJ_k

My EDM Top Ten

Day 2 of my countdown. Here are my next two standouts from the world of EDM over 2014.

8. Techno Music
I feel as though I was completely in the dark with techno sounds before this year. It was something I had never encountered
consciously, I probably imagined it to be nothing more than mid tempo basslines and overly predictable drum synths.
AND THEN I FOUND THE LIGHT.
Techno music (once I found it) has been a blast to listen to. It can have the effect of being dunked in a bucket of ice-cold coffee (its effect can be somewhat milder.) It gets you awake, gets your mind going. It just might get more of you out of before 11am if you're brave enough.
Check out the link below. If AM138 catches your fancy you can find a 2hour long mix that they made for IMFMag for your techo trial-by-fire..

https://soundcloud.com/am-138/towk

7. Witch House & Chilled Trap
My number seven is another genre for you to overwhelm your senses with. If you're reading this, then Trap music, (and perhaps Chilled Trap) is something you've most likely come across before. The trusty 808s so firmly underpin those crisp, sincere vocals and melodies, and I'm still unable to find anyone who honestly dislikes this 'power peaceful' sound. Witch House on the other hand might best be described as the Demon cousin of the 'power peaceful,' the order is less predictable, the upper layers are a bit more distorted, the entire thing has been dipped into liquid chaos and it emerges with a form that provokes both awe and terror. It's something that I will be paying special attention to over the next year.

My EDM Top Ten

Now a couple days ago, my buddy Jeremiah asked me to list my favourite ten electronic songs from this year for him. It's a question we all ask each other as December slips away from us and January looms ever closer, and this year may well have been my best year to date for being involved with the music I love, even when I've only been a fan (I'll probably say this every time.) But instead of limiting the list to songs (that would require a heart wrenching amount of compromise) I'm going to list everything from new artist discoveries to live events that I was a part of over the last year.

I'll be posting two pegs from my top ten each day until the New Years' Day, so stick around and enjoy the ride.

10. Liquid Drum & Bass

Now Liquid drum & bass has always been something I've loved, but somewhere over the course of the last three years the genre has taken a massive backseat for me. It wasn't until Liquicity announced their first London gig that I reconnected with my first electronic love. If liquid drum & bass isn't something you've encountered much then hit the link below, and give yourself an hour to dream away

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKHmwmEGFqI

9. Orkidea - Unity (Orion & J. Shore Remix)

Now, simply put. This song blew my mind. It is everything a song of this genre should be, it's calm and soothing and riveting all at the same time. Somewhere along the 8 minute long melody it holds the power to restore me to a peaceful place, always. I do believe this mix was finished long before 2014 began to be fair but it earns a place on my list regardless.
The final version of this song isn't actually up on Youtube, but earlier edits of are available for you to enjoy. The full version won't cost you much so do buy a download if you like what you hear.

Tom Day - Lala & Lili (Solace Remix)

It is really amazing to watch a young artist work hard and blossom. This remix of Tom Day's Lala & Lili marks the coming of age of young artist Solace. Ever since I connected with him on soundcloud I've been hearing many good things from this artist, each one progressively better. Now he has hit his stride and composed a remix that is simply amazing. It has such an emotional feel to it and honestly helped me get through more than one rough day. This is the type of music that needs to be heard and that doesn't get enough plays. Hopefully I can help get it out there.

Christina Perri - Burning Gold (Autograf Remix)

Christina Perri has such an amazing voice. I love the way Autograf kept most of them in tact when doing an emotional, tasteful remix of Burning Gold.

The interesting and original beat just adds such a great feel, you are instantly drawn in. The piano comes in and starts plucking at your heart strings. Then Christina's vocals carry you away. I can't say enough about this amazing remix. Very well done.

Wonder Wonder - Shark (Illenium Remix)

I'm normally not the type of person who locks on to one song and plays it over and over again. But there's something about +Illenium Official's remix of Shark by Wonder Wonder that I just can't stop hitting the repeat button. This production has such emotional depth, it definitely gives me feels. The drop is powerful and yet tastefully done. It fits in perfectly with the atmosphere and mood of the song. I can't wait to hear more releases from Illenium. His talent deserves to be heard by the world.

Alina Baraz & Galimatias - Fantasy

I love listening to a piece of music and having a moment where my jaw hits the floor. Fantasy by Alina Baraz & Galimatias definitely had some of those moments. After a beautiful 25 second intro with perfectly sliced vocal chops, the beat drops in with some amazingly beautiful vocals and stylistically sparse production. The song gradually picks up a great energy and feel. I can't help but be in  a great mood when I listen to it, and really, what else could you ask for from a song?

I expect to hear a lot more from this talented vocalist in the future.

Krewella - Alive (Stephen Swartz Remix)

I'm going to try to start doing a "Flash Back" friday to start shining the light on some of the amazing lesser know tracks and artists that I love but discovered before I started this blog. Today I offer you the amazing remix of Krewella's Alive by Stephen Swartz. Stephen has an incredible production style that you really must hear to understand.

Some people may describe it as "glitchy" or "choppy" but I think that is a gross oversimplification. Stephen finds a way to weave small samples and sounds in and out of his tracks with an amazing sense of style and grace. The result is an amazing tapestry of sound that brings an entirely new feel to this well known original.

It's been almost a year since I've heard anything from Stephen but I can't wait to hear more.

Wooden

It’s probably only been a week that I’ve known about Wooden, but believe me theirs is a ship you’ll want to be on while there’s still space. The nice chaps over in Karlsruhe (Germany) got in touch with me over Soundcloud after they saw that I “like bass music” to share some of their own with me. (I honestly did just quote that from the message they sent me!)
They describe their sound as a mixture of electronic synths and guitar riffs.  But after listening to some of their work I have to say that they massively undersold themselves. Imagine running through a forest in the blackness of night, a blinding white full moon above to guide you out. You’ve just called on supernatural powers to escape the terrors of the dark and there is still an unfamiliar, electrical energy sparking in your soul, an energy that creates an insatiable desire to live and fight your way through; a touch wordy I know, but that’s how I felt after listening to Rebellion (in the link below.)

Previously, two of the Wooden members were in a project called Rubjox (which by the way, is a brilliant project to look into); the then duo had a very dark, almost ‘electrometal’ kind of sound with it. Those influences are still involved with the group’s new vision and with the help of their new guitarist, they can realise their aural fantasies on a more robust and daring scale.

Please do check them out on their web socials, they are still a name rising through the electronic ranks and they really do value any and all the support they recieve.

Audeka - Mythical Creatures EP

When I first encountered Audeka’s sound, to tell you the truth I was a little bit confused. It was maybe a year ago with the remix of Dabin – Mirrormask, (which I can now say is a mix of apocalyptic fire goodness) but what puzzled me was the grand antithesis between the holiness of the intro and interlude against the hellish pommelling of the drops. I’d never heard anything like it before and I honestly was little frightened. Some artists use different aliases to show off their contrasting natures, some may use individual tracks; but Audeka just said “Let’s throw mercy and menace in a five minute mammoth track” and good Lord the way that approach works!

Many moons later, Audeka with an arsenal of new original releases (Masada & Chaos Reigns to name two) and myself with a much better understanding of the Neuro genres, the Mythical Creatures EP was released, and it takes about 30 seconds of the intro and title track to realise that the trio use the EP to make another pioneering move into the sound.
Listening across the EP, you cannot help but have the mental image of where Mythical Creatures comes from. Personally I think of Middle Age England, with grey skies muddy cloaks and rolling green hills – but all with added magic at an average 150bpm; but when it comes to themed music, you’d be hard pressed to find anything better than this. Taking inspiration from fantasy gaming and ancient mystery worlds, you are sent across time and magic and wonder with the EP, and with it Audeka are reaffirmed as one of champions of this ever developing sound.

West District - Sleepless

It's awesome when you can tell a track is going to be amazing within the first few seconds. Sleepless by West District is one of those songs. The arpeggiated chords at the beginning a la Moonlight Sonata and Operatic Vocal samples like something out of Lord of the Rings just instantly had me hooked. It goes on to build nicely into epic side chained synths and beautiful leads. It's really just a fantastic track all the way around! Please give it some love and grab the free download! Ben Gold - All or Nothing ft. Christina Novelli

Happy Friday! I've got a great uplifting track to kick your weekend off right! All or Nothing by Ben Gold ft. Christina Novelli is an amazing trance track that has a great energy and feel. The vocals are epic and the synths and chord progression knock this one out of the park! This is the first track off of Ben's #Goldrush Vol. 1 Compilation. He has recently started his own label, Goldrush Recordings, and his talent has not gone unnoticed. He currently has ties to none other than Armada Music. jdub - First Light

Today's track comes from one of our writers who also produces. The track is First Light by jdub. By his own admission, this track doesn't really fit any of the current subgenres. It is 128 BPM but doesn't have the 4 on the floor feel of house tracks. He wanted to keep things dynamic and not over compressed. Other well respected reviewers have said that this track reminded them of Porter Robinson. That is very high praise for this up and coming artist. Is it well deserved? Novo Amor & Ed Tullett - Faux (Said the Sky Remix)

"Working on this track was something I've never experienced before. The love I have for the original made it so easy make." - Said The Sky

I suppose it is something that only an artist can truly appreciate, but there are times when producing a track that everything just falls into place. It's the creative equivalent of an athlete being "in the zone".  Personally, I've only been there a few times, but it's easy to hear when others are there. Said The Sky, by his own admission was there when he remixed Faux by Novo Amor & Ed Tullett. It is a gripping, emotional piece that literally made my chest hurt with feels. I really love the use of acoustic instrument samples. The guitar and piano add such depth and color. As good as this track is, Said The Sky has many others that I could have easily featured. His remix of Fire Inside by Gemini has been creating quite a buzz in the EDM community. I can't wait to hear more from this young and promising talent!

This is the second remix from Elephante that I've posted and I just really like everything this guy puts out. His remix of Clean Bandit's Rather Be is full of energy, life, and really puts me in a great mood. It was the perfect song to keep me from getting depressed while coming back to work on the Monday after returning from the beach! Wilsen - Magnolia (REVOKE Remix)

I have to admit that I used to absolutely hate remixes. That's only because whenever I would hear them on the radio, they were so generic that it just killed the original song. A lot of DJ's will just slap a kick drum on every beat and some synths and call it a day. That was really what irritated me. But in my travels I've grown to love remixes because I've found some really good ones. They must include a melodic sensibility that works well with the original song. If done well, remixes can bring many things while paying respects to the original artist. Today I'm proud to present one such remix. Revoke's remix of Magnolia by Wilsen takes a gorgeous melody and vocal from the original track and gives it a new feel that is rife with tension. It creates a mood that is strangely chilling, yet beautiful. It gives me the feeling of the calm before the storm. The soft spoken breathy vocals contrast the suspense that comes through the haunting cello and minor chord progression. It really is a perfectly executed vision and musical idea, absolutely a must listen. I came across this remix when Candyland shared it on their facebook page. I'm glad to see that it's starting to get some attention that it so richly deserves! Make sure to grab the free download!

Bastille - Pompeii (Slander Heaven Trap Edit)

Not only did I find a great new track today, I found a new subgenre! The track is an edit of Pompeii by Bastille by Slander in a style they are calling "Heaven Trap". According to them, this subgenre of electronic music is categorized by its euphoric, flowing chords, 808 drums, and vocal chops. These elements create a new sound that is fresh and inspiring to me as a producer. They have 3 tracks on souncloud labeled as Heaven Trap including this one, and I would definitely recommend checking out the other two. I chose to feature this one as the introductory piece because, I have to admit, it gave me goosebumps. It is such a dynamic production with great drops, and a surprise at the beginning of the second drop that really got to me. I can't say enough about the track and what I hope will be one of the next big things in electronic music: Heaven Trap.

ZHU - Faded (ODESZA remix)

Every once in a while I come across a song that hooks me within a few seconds. ODESZA's remix of Faded by ZHU had me after the first 2 bars. This remix is just dripping with style. Its fuzzy bassline combined with a meaty kick drum and spacious claps really provide a great atmosphere to this track. The production is really top notch. It is a completely cohesive sound. One that begs to be listened to over and over again. Check out ODESZA's other tracks as well. They are all very good. At 100k soundcloud followers and counting, I doubt it will be long before they are headlining festivals. The quality is there, even if their popularity isn't quite there...yet.

Elephante has really done some amazing remixes and is getting better all the time. His remix of Gold Skies takes the original and turns it up to 11! Rameses B - Transcend

Transcend is a perfect title by this new track by Rameses B because it that's exactly what it does. While it contains ethereal vocals, drum & bass rhythms, and synthesized arpeggios, the call signs of electronic music, it should be recognized by fans of all genres simply as a work of art. Everything about this track is beautifully written, performed, and mixed. It has such an uplifting and calming vibe, one can't help but enthralled by it. James Egbert - The Void

I can't remember the last time that I've listened to an entire 13 track album all the way through. It's probably been a year or two at least. That is, until today. I started listening to The Void by James Egbert and I just couldn't stop. Each track was compelling, interesting, unique, and left me wanting more. This album is a great example of creating spacious mixes that allow the listeners to transport themselves to a delicate yet powerful world of sound that James has created. White Zoo - Planets

Got something hot for you today! This one has only been out for about 6 hours! The track is called Planets by an up-and-coming producer from Mannheim, Germany. His EP comes out today on Audiophile Records. What I love about Planets is that it sounds so fresh. Yes, there are many of the familiar EDM stylings, but White Zoo manages to use them in a way that seems new and unique. Every twist and turn led to something unexpected, and that left me with a big smile on my face. There are so many cookie cutter tracks out there it was truly refreshing to hear something like this. This is quite a debut from White Zoo and I hope to hear much more from him in the future!

Viper - Outlaw

Our first submission from a reader and it's a good one! Outlaw from viper is solid throughout with minor arpeggios and a gritty bassline that give it a dark feel worthy of the title. A very well thought out and executed drop brings many elements together and importantly for me, keeps the chord progression moving throughout. This is a great track from one of the lesser known artist's in the EDM scene. It's a free download so make sure you add it to your collection, and follow Viper for more great music!

Nitro Fun - New Game

One of my earliest memories is watching my cousins play Super Mario Brothers on NES. Ever since I have loved video games. I've also formed a fondness for the "blips" and "bleeps" that old-school consoles had to use to make music. There is an entire genre devoted to that style of music called "chiptunes". While New Game by Nitro Fun doesn't entirely classify as a Chiptunes track, it does take everything we know and love about chip music and blend it with a fresh electronic beat to create a fun an exciting track. While Nitro Fun isn't the first to attempt it, he's definitely done well, well enough to be picked up by well known label Monstercat. I expect many more releases down the road, but for now I'll just put this one on repeat, and take a stroll down memory lane.

Skrux - If You (Original Mix)

Electronic Music doesn't often get the credit it deserves for being a true art form. So often it's stereotyped as only being "rave music" or "computer music" or "techno". If You by Skrux is one of many examples of how electronic music can be so much more. Using just a few samples of chopped vocals, Skrux creates a dynamic and emotional piece that will hit you right in the feels. It is amazing how much the vocals communicate without ever really forming a full sentence. Perfectly mixed and produced, this is the latest in a long line of must have tracks from Skrux. Keep your eye out for more from this 19 year old producer. The sky is the limit for him.

Paradise - Oceans (feat. Grace)

Doing a complete 180 from our last featured track, Oceans (feat. Grace) by Paradise is one of those tracks that just makes you feel good. This cover of the #1 hit by Hillsong seems to part the clouds with its uplifting chord progression and world-class vocals. It's always good to have a track like this in your collection to help get you out of a funk, or to keep you flying high when you're having a good day. Either way, this is one that you don't want to miss.

Woolymammoth - Lord

I love artists who take risks. Woolymammoth has such a unique style and is a master of incorporating spoken word into his tracks, and he is definitely not afraid to take risks. Lord is a perfect example of this. He masterfully uses Samuel L. Jackson's recitation of Ezekiel 25:17 from pulp fiction to create a chilling and compelling effect. I just love how dark and grimey the bassline is. Amazing track. He's also graciously made it available for free download!

20syl - Game, Set & Match

What I love about electronic music is that there is really no limit to what can be created. This is a perfect example of how the right blend of creativity and technical skills can create a unique and interesting piece of music. Using sound samples from a tennis match, 20syl creates an amazing piece of music that you just have to hear to believe.

Day 1

Welcome to my new music blog! I've always been interested in finding the new and exciting music. I want to share the joy of discovering new music that you will listen to for years to come. In this age of technology there is so much great music that is being written and produced but only a fraction if it ever makes it to radio. I scour the internet looking for the best music, most of which will never make it to mass media, but that is still absolutely brilliant. I post music of all genres because I think good music is good music and can come from anywhere. Join me on this exciting musical journey!
